Emotion-Focused Dementia Care
The phrase emotion-focused care or person-centred care have become buzz words or phrases in the senior’s care sector. They provide an image of what most people believe care should be, but is it really? These terms are often used to describe the very things that advocates of true person-centred care rail against. For example, being on a bowel routine and having residents lining up for “bathroom time’ is not person-centred, but it is often referred to in this way.
True emotion-focused care, or person-centred care puts the emotional wellbeing of the person with dementia, and their family, at the very centre of every decision and activity that happens in the home. Tasks and operational work get done, but only after the emotional needs of those living in the home are met. Emotion-focused care holds the following beliefs:
Every person has value.
Every person is unique and special.
Every person has something to contribute to the running of the home.
The goal for all people living in the home is to maintain independence as long as possible.
Every person living in the home has the same rights as someone living in the community.
Every person has the right to make decisions about their life to the best of their ability. Just because someone has dementia doesn’t mean they can’t make decisions.
People living in retirement or long-term care should lead meaningful and enjoyable lives that are based on their interests, strengths, and capabilities. If their ability changes due to the progression of their illness, support and assistance will be provided to ensure that which is meaningful is still a part of their lives.
There is no power imbalance between those working in the home and those living there. All decisions will be made together and any refusal by the resident will be respected and honoured.
All staff should work in a supportive and positive environment that makes them feel fulfilled in their role, appreciated, and respected.
Families should be involved in every aspect of their loved one’s care to the degree they wish, in addition to being recognized as a valuable member of the home
At Presentation Manor, we are committed to the beliefs listed above, and will achieve true emotion-focused care by implementing the following strategies:
#1 - Extensive education of staff, both in creating a baseline understanding of dementia, how to care for those living in the different stages of dementia, and how to support people through non-pharmacological approaches while providing ongoing training to increase the skill and competency of staff.
#2 - Creating a warm and homey living environment that removes all symbols of institutional living while also creating spaces that support independence and recognition of the things that create challenges for those living with dementia.
#3 - Providing pleasurable dining and access to food – just like at home – that changes mealtime from being a task to an enjoyable and social part of their day.
#4 - The creation of a fulsome and strength-based knowledge of the person living in the home. This knowledge is used to plan all care and activities to ensure that every individual’s life is full, meaningful to them and busy.
#5 - Monitoring resident outcomes to ensure what we are doing is working and tweaking where necessary. We will also contribute to the body of research into dementia care which is currently lacking in quality-of-life studies.
#6 - Working with leaders and the sector to ensure policies, procedures, and mandated requirements support the emotional wellbeing of everyone living, working, and visiting the home.
In a nutshell, emotion-focused living provides those living with dementia a fulfilling and meaningful life that is centred on the things they love, with the people they love. Their independence will be supported and encouraged. The people working in the home will make the emotional wellbeing of the resident their primary job, and at the same time, will enjoy high levels of job satisfaction. Families visiting and sharing in the care of their loved one in an emotion-focused setting will continue to experience and enjoy the relationship with their family member, despite their stage of dementia and ability to interact as they once did. The love will still be there and be felt.
So, come on over to our house and see what true emotion-focused living is, and can be for everyone. We’ll put the kettle on for you!
